Big ugly cell tower or flag pole? You tell me. As I wrote just a couple days ago that Alcatel-Lucent, the European communications giant, has created lightRadio. This 2 ½ inch by 2 ½ inch square is the technology that everyone said would never come about. The squares are programmable to 2G, 3G and 4G and can be stacked to create as much power as is needed. The effective range is about 500 meters and they will fit into a lamp post.
Is this new breakthrough going to eliminate all the cell towers. Absolutely not. Most cell towers are used for longer range cellular service. This technology is going to be used mostly in rural areas to fix the dead spots, you know, “Can you hear me now”, spots.
So what is the problem? Sounds all good. Well keep your cell lease handy. You'll need it for reference when you get that phone call from either BlackDotWireless or MD7. Both of these firms are in the lease optimization business. Let me say this in plain English. These two firms are hired by cell carriers and are paid commissions based on how much they can lower your cell site lease payment. Yes, renegotiate your cell site lease.
Because these lightRadio cubes are so much cheaper to manufacture, install and maintain, they will eventually blanket the US for starters. Inevitably, some of the 250,000 to 300,00 cell sites around the country will experience either decommissioning or a reduction in rents.
You may want to do a little research, then get back to me. Youtube has some great videos and Google has a plethora of articles on the subject.
